Dear Colorado Senate Republicans,

The CBS Money Watch report “The Nine States Where Teachers Have It Worst,” listed our fair Colorado as the fifth worst state for teachers. While this is no surprise to me, as I’ve taught in Colorado for sixteen years, I know my elected representatives are regrettably and dangerously unaware or in denial about the looming (if not current) education crisis resulting from a lack of teacher funding, respect, and autonomy.

With PERA under attack, a new (and unnecessary, if not humiliating) evaluation system in the works, and a refusal from our state to find ways to adequately (not even competitively) fund our school systems, we are now at a critical moment— not just we teachers— but all stakeholders who hope for safe, prosperous, and well-educated communities.

Please….fix TABOR. Raise taxes. My gosh— rent is skyrocketing, the home market is ablaze (and has been for years), our state is booming—- why in the world are we the FIFTH worst state for teachers? It’s not just embarrassing— It’s so much worse than that. It’s me putting sixteen years of work into our Colorado high schools and still not having enough at the end of the month to put into savings. This is real for your teachers. It is punishing to work in Colorado as a public servant. At least, as a public servant in education.

Please check out the now nationally-recognized shameful Colorado reality: “The 9 states where teachers have it worst” CBS News. Money Watch. Apr 3, 2018.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
